Emerging Leaders Facilitator

Mario Mendez joined the Emerging Leaders facilitator team in 2026 after years of investing in the growth and development of young people, families, and communities through experiential education and outdoor leadership. As a graduate of Leading From Within’s Emerging Leaders Program (Cohort 8), Mario brings both a deep commitment to personal leadership development and a strong belief in the power of relationships, reflection, and authentic connection to create meaningful change.

Throughout his career, Mario has worked at the intersection of youth development, environmental education, and community engagement. His leadership has focused on creating opportunities for young people to build confidence, resilience, and a sense of belonging through experiences in nature. At Wilderness Youth Project, Mario has helped advance a mission centered on connecting people to themselves, each other, and the natural world through transformative outdoor experiences.

Mario’s facilitation style is grounded in curiosity, presence, and inclusion. He believes that leadership development is most powerful when people feel seen, challenged, and supported. Drawing from his experience working with diverse communities, he helps participants explore how their values, identities, and lived experiences shape the way they lead and influence others.

As both a practitioner and facilitator, Mario is passionate about helping emerging leaders develop the self-awareness, courage, and adaptability needed to navigate complexity and strengthen their impact. He views leadership not as a position, but as a lifelong practice of learning, service, and relationship-building.

Mario lives on California’s Central Coast and finds renewal through time outdoors, meaningful conversations, and adventures with family and friends. Whether facilitating a leadership conversation or guiding a group on a trail, he is inspired by the possibility that emerges when people connect more deeply with themselves, one another, and the world around them.
