My friend’s parents belong to a religion that requires followers to shun those who have left the faith…including, in this case, my friend, who happens to be their daughter. Recently her brother, their son, died unexpectedly. It has brought the family together in mourning. It’s the worst possible reason for a family to come together, but come together they have, spending time together and appreciating one another in ways they should have done all along. I hope the lesson sticks and that her parents continue to see that perhaps family is more important than dogma and that family members need and deserve one another’s love and support.
