SUMMARY:Come Join Us for a Guided Nature Experience
DESCRIPTION:Thanks to the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden\, this month\, there are two opportunities for LFW alumni leaders to experience the physical and psychological benefits of “forest bathing.”  Come join us and deepen your connection to nature while deepening your connection to self and others. Relax. Reconnect. Renew. \nForest bathing honors the ancient human practices of nature connection.  Elena Rios\, our guide for this experience\, will give you directions in the form of invitations to assist you in slowing down and observing with all of your senses. As you “bathe” in the fresh air and immune-boosting phytoncides\, you may begin to notice things in a way you may not have ever noticed before. The gathering ends with a ceremony of sharing tea made from locally foraged native plants and some healthy snacks. All you have to do is come and be yourself…and reconnect with nature and the more-than-human world.  Note: this walk includes slight downhill and uphill inclines on terrain that is rocky and uneven in certain portions. \nDates & Times: \nThe two dates LFW alumni leaders can sign up for are: \n\nWednesday\, October 9\, 2:00-4:00 PM\nThursday\, October 10\, 12:00-2:00 PM\n\nNote:  We are limited to 15 people per session\, so please do not sign up unless you are confident you will be there.  You also need to be able to arrive at least 15 minutes in advance of the start of the program. \nAbout Our Guide\, Elena Ríos: \nElena Ríos is an ever-evolving ANFT Certified Nature & Forest Therapy Guide and Inter-disciplinary Artist. From an early age\, Elena’s family cultivated in her an interest in the exploration and appreciation of nature and the more-than-human world. Elena Continues to participate with traditional circles of learning\, wellness\, and ways of being that are rooted in Indigenous knowledge. She believes this practice has the potential to assist us in noticing the Interconnectedness of All Things. She draws inspiration from her grandmother\, who was a curandera. She has had a partnership as a cultural practitioner with Japanese Shinto Priest\, Hiroji Seikiguchi for almost 20 years. Currently\, she is an employee of the Chumash Fire Department\, Santa Ynez Band of Chumash Indians. She is an indigenous Azteca Chichimeca woman of the Americas with distant genetic Chumash links including multi-ethnic Spanish\, Scot-Irish ancestry.” Her guide style is informed by all of these previous life experiences.

SUMMARY:Leadership Roundtable
DESCRIPTION:Leading From Within invites anyone from our community to join us in partnership with UCSB Arts & Lectures Thematic Learning Initiative for a Leadership Roundtable on Friday\, November 17 at noon. This will be a guided conversation featuring select leaders from our community to share thoughts and reflections based on the Arts & Lectures interview the evening prior (Nov 16) with Adam Grant\, author of a new book Hidden Potential (out late October – see description below). Note – the author will not be present at this event. \n“Bootstraps aren’t meant to be pulled alone”\, says social psychologist Adam Grant. Based on Grant’s book and presentation\, we’ll look at how teamwork\, coaching and building a support system provides the scaffolding we need to transform ourselves or others – and sometimes the world around us. \nLunch will be provided; spaces are limited – register below! \nThis is a free event located at Leading From Within’s office & convening space in the Riviera Business Park in Santa Barbara. \n \nWe recommend attending Adam Grant’s live talk November 16th at the Arlington Theater. A free copy of his new book Hidden Potential is included in the tick purchase. Learn more and buy a ticket at the Arts & Lectures website. This year\, A&L’s Thematic Learning Initiative theme is Cultivating Connection through Joy\, Creativity and Belonging.\n \nHidden Potential offers a new framework for raising aspirations and exceeding expectations. Adam Grant weaves together groundbreaking evidence\, surprising insights\, and vivid storytelling that takes us from the classroom to the boardroom\, the playground to the Olympics\, and underground to outer space. He shows that progress depends less on how hard you work than how well you learn. Growth is not about the genius you possess—it’s about the character you develop. Grant explores how to build the character skills and motivational structures to realize our own potential\, and how to design systems that create opportunities for those who have been underrated and overlooked. \nREGISTER HERE\nThank you for your interest. We have reached our capacity. If you are interested in being on the waitlist\, please email julie@leading-from-within.org. \n

SUMMARY:Mindful Presence Series - Fall 2023
DESCRIPTION:“There’s no greater gift to ourselves and those we are privileged to lead and work with than self-care; \nadding mindful presence increases self-care to a whole nother level.” \n – Wendy Sims-Moten\, First 5 Santa Barbara County\n4 sessions: Wednesdays\, September 27 – October 18\n3:00-5:00 PM\, in-person at Leading From Within\nKen Saxon and Jennifer Reitz are offering this four-session program series “Mindful Presence” at the LFW office located in the beautiful Riviera Business Park in Santa Barbara\, and you are invited to join them for the journey. We’ve been through so much challenge and disruption over the past few years. As a leader and person\, might this be a good time to reconnect with and prioritize yourself? Might investing in the qualities of your own presence help you to better support all those who rely on you – at work and elsewhere? \nWhat is this “Mindful Presence” program?\nThis program will support participants to lead their lives and their work with greater intentionality and presence\, and to explore practices to cultivate themselves and their leadership. In and between these four sessions\, participants will engage in: \n\npractices that cultivate mindfulness\, including different types of meditation and embodied practice\nmindful communications\, including cultivating presence and listening skills\nexploration on relevant themes fundamental to presence\ndesign (or re-design) of practices that can can help one live and lead with greater intentionality\ninspiration from peers also committed to growing in self-awareness and intentionality\n\nMindfulness\, embodied practice and self-reflection support leaders to bring their most vibrant and effective presence to the many challenges inherent in leadership roles\, and to guide their careers and their lives with greater intentionality and sustainability. As our mind is\, our life becomes – so it is critical for each of us to attend to the qualities of our mind. \nWho is this program for?\nThis Mindful Presence program is intended for nonprofit\, philanthropic and other social sector professionals and volunteers. \nCommitment\, Registration\, & Cost\nPlease register for this Mindful Presence Series with the intention to participate in all (or at least 3) of the sessions and between sessions. Your full engagement is required to achieve the benefits of the program. The program cost is $150\, and scholarships are available if needed. This is an ongoing leadership development opportunity\, which we advocate be supported as professional development wherever possible. \nPurchase tickets below. Spaces are limited! \nAbout Our Facilitators\nKen Saxon is Board Chair of Leading From Within (LFW)\, a facilitator in LFW’s Courage to Lead program\, and he was the founding instructor for LFW’s Emerging Leaders program. In 2021\, Ken completed the Training in Mindfulness Facilitation program of the UCLA Semel Institute for Neuroscience and Human Behavior.  He launched this Mindful Presence program in late 2021\, and loves co-teaching it with LFW board member Jennifer Reitz.. \n  \n \nJennifer Reitz is a Master Somatic coach\, trainer and organizational consultant with over 20 years experience in leadership\, team development\, organizational change\, and strategic planning – as well as a Leading From Within board member. She works with leaders and organizations to increase their personal and professional satisfaction and effectiveness by bringing their actions into alignment with their deepest commitments and goals. \n\n\nQuestions?\nIf you have any questions about this program offering\, please be in touch with Ken at ksaxon@silcom.com.

SUMMARY:Mindful Presence Series
DESCRIPTION:“There’s no greater gift to ourselves and those we are privileged to lead and work with than self-care; adding mindful presence increases self-care to a whole nother level.” \n – Wendy Sims-Moten\, First 5 Santa Barbara County\n4 sessions: January 20 and 27\, February 3 and 10\, 2023\n9:00-11:00AM\, via Zoom\nKen Saxon and Jennifer Reitz are offer this four-session program series “Mindful Presence” on Zoom\, and you are invited to join them for the journey. The program cost is $150\, and scholarships are available where needed. This is an ongoing leadership development opportunity\, which we advocate be supported as professional development wherever possible. \nRegister by completing the form below. Spaces are limited! \nAbout Our Facilitators\nKen Saxon is Board Chair of Leading From Within (LFW)\, an instructor in LFW’s Courage to Lead program\, and he was the founding instructor for LFW’s Emerging Leaders program.. Through city living and demanding pandemic times\, we may live at a distance from the natural world and our inner nature too.\nThese two landscapes have much in common and inform each other.\n\n“The natural world desperately needs people who appreciate it\, have reverence for it\, listen to it\, preserve\, and restore it. With the same urgency\, so does the soul need this kind of attunement and nurturance. \nCut off from the land\, we lose our sense of place\, grounding\, our sense of home and belonging on this earth; when we are out of touch with our souls our lives become barren\, starved at the roots of what deeply animates us.”  \n(adapted from Geography of Grace\, courageandrenewal.org)\n\nHow might a Saturday trail hike – or nature gathering – with beloved CTL friends reinvigorate your body and refresh your mind?\n\nEryn Shugart and Judy Hawkins will host our Courage to Lead alumni – all cohorts – for a short\, medium or longer hike.\n We invite you to reground connections to one another with possibilities for walk-and-talk\, touchstone metaphors\, pauses for viewing vistas and welcomed silence.\n\n\n\n\n\nRSVP HERE \n\nQuestions about this gathering?\nPlease contact: Eryn: eryn@santabarbaraeducation.org or\n\n                         Judy: judy@rubyroadleadership.com

DESCRIPTION:Women in Leadership – A Discussion for Everyone\nFacilitated by Diane Adam and Emily Smith of Touchstone Central Coast.\nChanging the opportunities for Women as Leaders through Leading with Love and operating with a Servants Heart. Servant leaders come to the table with different expectations. They prioritize their team and empower their team to do the best they can. Women\, often\, are the most effective and have a leadership advantage with this style of leadership. \nThe pandemic of 2020\, unfortunately\, has created a loss of nearly 3 million women in the workforce. This past year threatens to wipe out all the progress made over the last several decades to close the gender gaps and if not addressed will exacerbate existing inequalities. This presentation and panel discussion will provide an outline for Servant Leadership and how to support women in the workforce and create an environment that women want to work in. \n  \n\nRegistration is full!\nWe have reached full capacity and can no longer take more registrants. We apologize for any inconvenience\, and hope to offer another opportunity for engagement in the near future. \nThank you for your support and understanding. \n\nAbout the Facilitators:\nDiane Adam \nWhen I left a career in Clinical Laboratory Science I had a realization that I wanted to be with people more than with microscopes. The decision was easy then and I have been rewarded many times over with positive relationships and learning opportunities. I am always on the lookout for more! \nA favorite saying at Touchstone is “we are all leaders in our own life” and Leading with Love means to me that I must endeavor to be a good colleague\, friend\, and human being. I strive to be empathetic\, compassionate and receptive in my relationships and communications with people no matter the setting. \nIn my 20+ years as a community volunteer and non-profit leader\, I have exercised honesty with my word and openness with my heart. Through a lens of empathy I have been able to prove myself in board rooms and work rooms alike. Important to my process is a collaborative spirit along with a dose of fun and creativity. \nThere is nothing like the feeling of being heard\, acknowledged and validated. These feelings are especially important for me to foster during interactions with clients. As an active listener\, I love to be present with individuals in terms of time and attention. I delight in opportunities to meet people where they are\, in their work space and in their comfort zone. It is an honor to cultivate growth and teamwork as well as to connect talents of individuals with desired outcomes for themselves or for a group. \nWhether I am leading a board of directors\, making connections between people or being a worker bee\, recognizing individuality and people’s unique value is top of mind. The people and organizations I have been privileged to serve say they appreciate my spirit\, can do attitude and follow through. \nTouchstone Central Coast is a dream realized and Leading with Love keeps that dream alive. \n  \nEmily Smith \nAs a professional in industry\, a community-volunteer and with over 20 years of experience in education\, I’ve been fortunate to work alongside and lead diverse group of teams and individuals. \nRecognizing the power in on-going learning\, growth and development\, I consider myself a life-long learner. It is through this lens that I work with clients to discover a successful path in their life and work journey. One of my favorite quotes is “Your life is a story\, make it a bestseller.” It is my goal to establish a trusting relationship that inspires\, empowers and motivates clients to progress and succeed. I consider it an honor to assist clients in establishing clear goals\, bringing awareness to underlying beliefs and committing to a measurable action plan\, ultimately creating their own “bestseller.” \nI have learned throughout my own journey\, that we all have a personal story. When we work from the heart we listen more\, taking time to understand one another. This results in more opportunities to learn and grow. Sharing and listening removes barriers. Leading with love may seem unconventional\, but it is good for ANY organization or relationship. There is no business or life without people. When people thrive\, so do your business and your relationships. \nWhen you demonstrate caring approaches to work and life\, people respond positively and more productively. Showing genuine concern and compassion for the people you share life with doesn’t diminish your respectability or reputation as a strong leader\, but instead brings out the best in others while fostering an environment that is supportive and trusting. The result of practicing good leadership is high morale\, good employee retention\, and sustainable long-term success for you and those with whom you work with. \nI look forward to working with you on your personal leadership journey – from the inside out. \n\nLearn more about Touchstone Central Coast.\n

SUMMARY:Transcendental Meditation & Self-Care for Social Sector Leaders
DESCRIPTION:Introduction | What is Transcendental Meditation?\nJoin us on Wednesday\, September 16th at 4-5 pm to learn about a new offering from Leading From Within. \nRegister below or Join on Zoom\n\n\nWhat is Transcendental Meditation (or TM for short)?\nIt’s a simple\, natural\, effortless technique practiced 20 minutes twice each day while sitting comfortably with the eyes closed. \nThe TM technique allows your active mind to easily settle inward\, through quieter levels of thought\, until you experience the most silent and peaceful level of your own awareness — pure consciousness. \nSix things you should know about it:\n1. It is absolutely effortless — It’s so easy and enjoyable that anyone can do it. This makes it very different from other techniques.  So\, \n\nNo concentrating or trying to control the mind\nNo trying to “empty the mind”\nNo monitoring of thoughts (e.g. mindfulness)\n\n2. Authentic — The TM technique was founded by Maharishi Mahesh Yogi over 50 years ago\, and has been taught in almost all countries around the world. It can only be taught by certified TM teachers in a structured and standard course. Even Maharishi did not claim to have invented TM but revived the knowledge and practice of it from the Vedic tradition. \n3. Evidence-based — Hundreds of published research studies on the TM technique have documented major benefits for: \n\nReduction of stress and anxiety\nCoherent brain function\nCardiovascular health\nImproved harmony in relationships\n\n4. Unique — Other meditations often claim to be the same or similar to the TM technique. However the differences are quite important. No other has the depth of scientific research relating to it. No external dependency on someone else or on an app to guide your meditation\, once learned. \n5. Established — Over six million people have learned the TM technique and experienced its benefits — people of all ages\, cultures\, religions\, and walks of life. \n6. Nothing to believe in — The TM technique is not a religion\, philosophy\, or lifestyle. No belief or expectation is needed for it to be effective. In fact it can help if you are a little skeptical because then you wont be trying to make it work (see point 1) \n\nPlease contact us with any questions.
