Who Should Be Nominated

Is the Katherine Harvey Fellows a Match for Your Nominee?

The Katherine Harvey Fellows are young professionals, ages 25-45, with a passion for learning about and engaging community leadership. Selection is made through a nomination process. Nominations may come from the candidate’s manager, colleague, friend, or even family member.
We recognize that it takes the work of people from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives to address community issues. Thus, we seek and encourage nominations from diverse professional and ethnic backgrounds, and from all Santa Barbara County communities.

Please take the following criteria into consideration when nominating candidates for Katherine Harvey Fellows:

  1. Reside and/or work in Santa Barbara County
  2. Age 25-45
  3. Demonstrated potential or current ability to make an impact in Santa Barbara County
  4. Intellectually curious and open to exploring new ideas
  5. Ready to expand their commitment to serving Santa Barbara County
  6. Able to make a full commitment to all phases of the program (see commitment below)
  7. Employed outside of the nonprofit sector (we encourage nonprofit professionals to apply for our Emerging Leaders or Leading for Community Impact programs)

Commitment

Our funders and donors have chosen to invest in this program because of their belief in the program’s impact on strengthening the social sector.  To honor this confidence, we ask that all nominees be fully committed to the program including:

  1. Making a personal contribution to the program of any amount in lieu of program fees
  2. Spending approximately five hours per month in a variety of ways which may include:
    • pre-work preparing for sessions such as reading assigned articles, watching videos, and reflecting on material in order to fully participate in panels and workshops.
    • attending 2-hour panel type discussions on most months
    • one 4-hour retreat at start of program and one 4-hour retreat at end of program
    • organized coffee-talk type meetings and discussions with community leaders (on months with no 2-hour panel)
    • outside interviews and group meetings related to project focus area
  3. Attending quarterly meetings with mentor, an experienced community leader
  4. Participating in outside project-based work  (for research, selection and fundraising) during the second half of program
  5. With support and guidance from instructors, organizing and facilitating (in teams) one or two panel discussions
  6. Engaging in optional opportunities for monthly networking coffee-type meetings
