HISTORY

Leading From Within was founded in 2008 when Ken Saxon and Kim Stokely launched the Courage to Lead program to invest in renewal, leadership development and peer community for experienced nonprofit executive leaders. Since then, more than 60 Executive Directors have participated in this year-long professional development program.

In 2012, the organization expanded in an effort to support the growth of the Courage to Lead and its growing alumni program, and also to build additional needed programming for others driven to lead in their communities through their work in nonprofit organizations.

In January 2013, Leading From Within launched two new programs — its Emerging Leaders program to develop the next generation of professional nonprofit leaders, and the Katherine Harvey Fellows program (in partnership with the Santa Barbara Foundation) to develop future community and volunteer leaders in Santa Barbara County.

In 2016, we launched Leading for Community Impact program to invest in leaders in the Santa Maria, Lompoc and Santa Ynez Valley and surrounding areas, who are on the front lines of serving many of Santa Barbara County’s most vulnerable residents. As with all thriving communities, it is vitally important to develop and support the current and next generation of nonprofit and other social sector leaders.

Today, we are focused on adding new, adaptive offerings to our social sector network by listening to our constituents’ needs and learning new ways of meeting those needs. As the social sector and its leaders grow in their impact throughout our communities, Leading From Within aims to support and leverage their ability to create positive change.
